Biography of Actress Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler was born on September 16, 1971 in Burlington, Massachusetts. She graduated at the Boston College in 1993 and became one of the key members in My Mother’s Fleabag, America’s oldest improvised comedy group. After graduation, Amy Poehler moved to Chicago and studied at Second City, and afterwards she joined the comedy group Upright Citizen’s Brigade in 1996. Her first stint on TV came in the same year, when she provided her voice and writing skills in the TV movie Escape From It’s a Wonderful Life. She also took on the role of Stacy, Andy Richter’s little sister on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

When her group Upright Citizen’s Brigade relocated to New York, they were able to bag their own sketch comedy series which lasted for three seasons at the Comedy Central. By then, Amy Poehler has finished her film debut entitle Tomorrow Night, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Amy Poehler also became a regular face on television, starting with a guest appearance in the sitcom Spin City which starred Michael J. Fox. In 1999, she played a role in Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo, followed by Wet Hot American Summer and The Devil and Daniel Webster. The last two movies were box office failures, however, and were never released in American theaters.

In 2001, Amy Poehler began to appear on Saturday Night Live, as a featured player. The following year she became part of the show’s full cast, sharing such distinction with Harry Shearer and Eddie Murphy. While in Saturday Night Live, Amy Poehler did a successful job in making parodies of stars including Paula Abdul, Sharon Osbourne, Kelly Ripa, Avirl Lavigne, Madonna, Sharon Stone, Michael Jackson, Nancy Grace, and Dakota Fanning, to name a few. In 2004, she became the co-anchor of SNL’s Weekend Update replacing Jimmy Fallon. Together with Tina Fey, Amy Poehler ‘doubled the sexual tension’ in the Weekend Update, making it one of the highlights of SNL. Tina Fey left in the end of the 2005-06 to devote time to the sitcom 30 Rock, and she was replaced by Seth Myer to share the desk with Amy Poehler.

Aside from Saturday Night Live, Amy Poehler worked on two motion pictures that opened on the same day Envy, with Jack Black and Ben Stiller, and the popular teen flick Mean Girls starring Lindsay Lohan.

Amy Poehler has been married to actor Will Arnett since 2003. Will Arnett is famous for the critically acclaimed comedy Arrested Development. Amy Poehler made guest appearances on the series, portraying the roles of his wife.
